As Women in Franchising Month puts the spotlight on female business owners across the country, one Northern Beaches success story stands out close to home.
Kathy has owned the Just Cuts Salon at Warriewood for 13 years. She also owns the Balgowlah Salon, recently converted from the network's first-ever Just Cuts kiosk into a full in-store salon. Warriewood now ranks among the Top 20 Just Cuts Salons in the country. Balgowlah, despite being one of the smallest salons in the network, continues to outperform.
Kathy came to franchising from outside the industry. In her early 50s, a single mum working in administration for an Australian food company, she was already a client at Warriewood before buying the Salon.
“When the opportunity came up in 2013, I decided to take the leap. I haven’t looked back,” Kathy said.
She didn’t need a hairdressing background. She needed the right opportunity and the right support.
“I was confident I was buying into a business that was well known and respected, with a team at Head Office supporting me every step of the way,” Kathy said. “I honestly wouldn’t know where to start if I had tried to build a business from scratch.”
The early years were demanding. “It was a huge learning curve, and I spent a lot of time working on and in the business,” she said. Thirteen years on, the business now gives her the flexibility to swim most mornings, get to the gym, and take trips away when she can.
For Kathy, the reward has been the people as much as the numbers.
“It gives me purpose and I get great satisfaction from it,” she said. “I’ve made so many wonderful friends among the other Franchise Owners, and their support over the years has been invaluable. I also have a fantastic team of Stylists who genuinely enjoy working in our Salons, and it’s always lovely to hear Clients comment on the positive atmosphere.”
Kathy’s story is one of many that reflects the strength of the Just Cuts franchise model: an established system, real support, and a flexible path to owning your own business later in a career, not just at the start of one.
Just Cuts operates more than 230 salons across Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
For Kathy, the decision she made in 2013 has become more than a business investment. It’s a career she loves, a lifestyle she values, and a future she’s proud to have built on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

More about Just Cuts:
Just for you. Since 1982.
In 1982, Denis McFadden had to wait three months to vacate a lease he no longer needed, as he had already moved his Sydney salon business. To keep things simple, he decided to hold a promotion offering a “no-appointment” $7 Style Cut for all Clients.
The response was outstanding, and that day marked the moment the Just Cuts brand was born.
Just Cuts is an Australian hairdressing franchise that bridges the gap between a barber and a high-end hair salon. With Salons in every state of Australia, on both the North and South Islands of New Zealand and within the United Kingdom, it is the largest hairdressing company from the Southern Hemisphere.
Based on a fixed-price, no-appointment system, Just Cuts offers Clients affordable haircuts from fully qualified hairdressers and performs over 100,000 Style Cuts per week across the globe.
