For many Australians, owning a business is a lifelong dream. For Kathy, it became an opportunity to create a more secure future while building a career she genuinely loves.
Now celebrating 13 years as a Just Cuts Franchise Owner, Kathy owns two successful Just Cuts Salons at Warriewood and Balgowlah on Sydney's Northern Beaches. Her journey is proof that you don't need a hairdressing background to build a successful business, you simply need the right opportunity and the right support.
Before joining Just Cuts, Kathy had worked across several industries and was employed in administration for an Australian food company. As a single mum in her early 50’s, she was looking ahead to retirement and knew she wanted something more.
"I was encouraged by my sister, who works in the Just Cuts Support Centre, to purchase my first Salon," Kathy said.
"I was already a Client at Warriewood, and when the opportunity came up in 2013, I decided to take the leap. I haven't looked back."
Since taking ownership, Kathy has transformed the Warriewood Salon into one of the network's strongest performers, with the Salon now ranking among the Top 20 Just Cuts Salons across Australia.
She also owns the Balgowlah Salon, which recently transitioned from the first-ever Just Cuts kiosk into a full in-store Salon. Despite being one of the smallest Salons in the network, it continues to deliver outstanding performance.
For Kathy, one of the most rewarding aspects of franchise ownership has been the people.
"It gives me purpose and I get great satisfaction from it," she said.
"I've made so many wonderful friends among the other Franchise Owners, and their support over the years has been invaluable. I also have a fantastic team of Stylists who genuinely enjoy working in our Salons, and it's always lovely to hear Clients comment on the positive atmosphere."
Like many new business owners, Kathy admits the early years required hard work and commitment.
"It was a huge learning curve, and I spent a lot of time working on and in the business," she said.
"But over the years, I've been able to create a lifestyle that gives me flexibility and balance. I now have the freedom to enjoy morning swims, go to the gym and take trips away whenever I can."
Looking back, Kathy says joining an established franchise made all the difference.
"I was confident I was buying into a business that was well known and respected, with a team at Head Office supporting me every step of the way," she said.
"I honestly wouldn't know where to start if I had tried to build a business from scratch."
Kathy's story reflects the strength of the Just Cuts franchise model, which has supported Franchise Owners for more than 35 years through proven business systems, comprehensive training and ongoing operational support.
With more than 230 Salons across Australia, New Zealand and now Canada, Just Cuts continues to provide opportunities for aspiring business owners looking to invest in a recognised brand with an established support network.
For Kathy, the decision she made in 2013 has become far more than a business investment, it's become a career she loves, a lifestyle she values and a future she is proud to have built.
