From Salon Floor to Franchise Success: Nikki’s 36-Year Journey with Just Cuts Inspires the Next Gene

16 Sep 2025

From humble beginnings as a stylist to becoming a long-standing and successful Just Cuts franchise owner, Nikki, now the proud owner of Just Cuts Roselands, is a shining example of how passion, leadership, and the support of a trusted brand can lead to long-term business success.

Nikki’s journey with Just Cuts began in 1989, when she joined the very first salon in Hurstville, working directly under founder Dennis McFadden.

“I was a stylist for about 10 years, including 3 years with Dennis,” says Nikki. “From the moment I walked past the Hurstville salon, I knew I wanted to own one someday. I loved that it was just cutting — it was simple, familiar, and aligned with my passion.”

In 1992, Nikki took a leap of faith and purchased the Hurstville salon. In 1996, she acquired the Bankstown location, which she successfully ran until 2001.

“My husband encouraged me to sell one of the three salons at the time, I was managing 45 staff and raising two young children, aged five and two. He thought it was too much for me, but honestly, I was coping very well,” Nikki shares. “These days, it’s even easier with the systems we have in place — everything’s at your fingertips.”

Back in the mid-1990s, the Hurstville salon was thriving,  at times servicing up to 800 clients a week.

“It was a crazy, exciting time. The demand was incredible.”

In 1998, Nikki opened Just Cuts Roselands, where she continues to lead today, proudly marking 27 years at that location. Even after decades in the business, she still works on the salon floor three days a week, staying connected to both her team and her clients.

When asked what inspired her to transition from stylist to salon owner, Nikki reflects:

“I’ve always had a natural leadership mindset. I wanted to build something of my own. Dennis was incredibly supportive, always sharing advice on how to treat staff, how to lead with care and respect. He taught me that if you look after your team, they’ll look after your business.”

Nikki’s management style is grounded in a people-first philosophy.

“I don’t micromanage. I praise my staff and understand they have lives outside of work. Happy staff create a better environment and better experiences for our clients.”

When reflecting on her proudest achievements, Nikki highlights her enduring belief in the Just Cuts franchise model.

“Being part of the Just Cuts family and believing in the model has been incredibly rewarding. People often asked why I didn’t go out on my own but I believed in the Just Cuts system. When you open a new salon, you’re not alone. The support is there, from setup to training to ongoing business tools. It felt good to be backed by a team that wanted me to succeed.”

Today, Nikki enjoys the flexibility that franchise ownership provides.

“Owning a salon gave me the freedom to spend more time with my family. I can work remotely, even from my caravan,  I went to Uluru for a month and still managed my team through the Just Cuts app. That’s the beauty of the system.”

Her advice for stylists considering franchise ownership is simple:

“If you’re passionate and love what you do, take the leap. The support is there, the systems are proven, and you’ll be part of something bigger: a family that truly wants you to succeed. Learn from other franchise owners, attend conferences, and take inspiration from the community. It’s not just about cutting hair, it’s about building a business, creating relationships, and growing something you can be proud of.”

With over three decades of experience, Nikki’s story is a powerful testament to the strength of the Just Cuts franchise model and a call to all aspiring business owners:

Your dream salon could be just one decision away.
